Well turned-out Tatik

tatikEvery Tatik in Armenia wears the same outfit, day in, day out: a dress or pinny with deep pockets for holding freshly picked cucumbers, new-laid eggs or the like. This is accessorized with mens’ socks pulled to mid-shin level–often two pairs for layered effect–and outdoor slippers. The dress is always patterned with flowers, the better to disguise the stains that are an inevitable part of kitchen and garden work. It may have either a zipper or buttons up the front.

Those tatiks who have dresses with buttons find themselves surprisingly fashionable, for what we used to call shirt-waisters, and what magazines now call button-throughs are right on trend. Elle says buttons will be big in fall 2017, and so will vintage florals. Tatiks, it seems, are trailblazers.

It was so hot in Yerevan at the end of August that I bought myself a Tatik dress. It is cotton and deliciously cool. I paid $10–I am sure twice what a genuine Armenian tatik is asked to spend–the stallholder saw this American granny coming. So far, I haven’t succumbed to the allure of manly footwear, but it isn’t winter yet…

Love, love it.  Dresses, skirts are so much cooler than trousers, but shaving my legs 😦
